About
BJ Erickson
BJ Erickson
is an artisan gold-silversmith in Columbus and has made jewelry for many jewelry stores in
Central Ohio for
over 28 years. Her teacher was Russell
Colley, the engineer and artist who made the first silver nylon
pressure suits and therefore enabled human space travel most notably
the space suits worn by the NASA astronauts on the first manned space
flight to the moon. At his home in Cuyahoga Falls, BJ honed her craft
to the exquisite work she creates today. Working
mostly with sterling silver and stones, she designs original necklaces, rings,
pendants and bracelets.
BJ
uses two methods to make her jewelry. The first method is construction
which is the process of sawing, filing, sanding and soldering of sheet
and wire to create the design. The second is the lost wax process
which involves carving a wax model which is then cast in silver or
gold.
Her latest passion is lapidary work (the art of cutting, polishing
and engraving stone). BJ's
stone collection includes rare and unusual agate and jaspers which are
hand cut by her. Stones range in cut, and BJ uses either a cabochon cut -- round
stone with a flat bottom -- or faceted stones that are cut like a
diamond. As BJ says, 'It's so much fun to look at a piece of rough
rock and envision what it will turn into."
Most
pieces are all sterling silver combined with stones. She will
make make pieces in gold. BJ's
work has been admired, appreciated, and owned by well-known Author Tom
Clancy and England's legendary and former Prime Minister, Margaret
Thatcher. Contact BJ via email at bj@echoesoftheheart.com
